Details

Birthing Embrace offers the 6 week home birth prenatal class series, We Birth At Home, to make you feel confident and prepared for your upcoming home birth. Our multi-day, 15 hour class (six consecutive 2.5 hour weeknight/weekend classes), is set up in a fun and interactive format, encouraging students to get to know each other. Each day of class will have a birthing segment, a comfort measure segment, and a postpartum/newborn segment, to help you prepare for both your home birth and your first few weeks with your baby.

Childbirth Class

You will learn everything you need to know about pregnancy, birth, and post-partum care. We will discuss comfort measures and pain management. We will include lots of time for questions and group discussion throughout each session, and there will be extra time at the end of each class for more questions. Birthing Embrace wants you to leave our classes feeling informed about birth and empowered to have a joyful birth.

Note: To allow for a natural flow of class discussion, we occasionally shuffle topics from one day to the next. People learn best through participation and group discussion so we like to leave room for that to happen!

What are the benefits?

Looking for childbirth classes?

Childbirth classes bring a host of benefits to expectant parents. Together with your partner, you'll gain the knowledge you require to make informed decisions about your birth, and the confidence to know that those decisions are right for you. Birth is a natural process and we'll help you trust your body's innate abilities. You'll learn pain management techniques so that wherever and however you choose to birth, you'll be not just ready for the experience - you'll be excited.

In group discussions you'll learn about other people's questions and concerns - including your partner's. For many couples, the birth class is the primary way for dad to get involved during the pregnancy, and he'll learn how to support both mom and the new baby. Hearing about other people's perspectives on birth can be a real eye-opener, and you just might make some new friends on the way.

We cover a wide range of topics, so you'll be ready. Many are focused on you: how it feels to go through the stages of birth, what to do and when to do it, and relaxation and pain management techniques. Others are focused on the process: home births, water births, and hospital transfers. Finally, we look at the big picture: supporting each other as your family grows, breastfeeding and nutrition, sleep patterns (and coping with them!), and community resources available to you. With an understanding of these topics, you'll be ready to embrace birth.

Infant Sleep Support

Dream On: The Art & Science of Infant Sleep Class (2 hours)

A prenatal class designed to prepare parents for the changes that take place when a new baby arrives. You will not be learning how to shape new babies to fit into lives and schedules. Instead, you will be learning the science behind infant/maternal sleep and with this information you will develop the tools needed to create balance around those facts. All parents deserve, first and foremost, to be presented with the facts - based in science with regards to their babies and sleep needs. There is no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all" approach, and that is where the art of sleep comes in.

We will be creating a space for mothers and partners to follow their instincts when it comes to their new baby, which will allow them to set the stage for optimal brain development. We want to spread the word that babies wake up through the night, and for good reason. We want to share the other side of the sleep story!

As a Sleep Educator, I promote caring for a baby's need no matter the time of day or night. By giving you realistic expectations of your baby, I hope to alleviate a lot of stress and worry you could have otherwise if you expected baby to sleep through the night in the first year. There are some pros and cons to this approach and we believe it is the option that bears the least regrets in the long run.

Agenda for the class:

  • Intro to "Attachment Parenting"
  • The basics of infant sleep
  • Common Challenges
  • Popular sleep training methods
  • The impact and consequences of traditional sleep training
  • Gentle ways to get a newborn to sleep
  • Preparing your perfect Nursery
  • How Birthing Embrace is supporting new families

Making a Birth Plan (2 hours)

This class explores the many options you have in birth – and there are more than you may realize. A birth plan helps you find out what you don't know, helps you communicate with your birth team, and prepares you for any decisions that will be required during labour and delivery. A checklist is provided and discussed, as well as a birth plan template. You leave this class with a finished draft of your birth plan, which you can then simplify at home. This is a great class if you are wondering what your options are and what kind of control you have over them.
